The Marquee tool is a set of basic pixel selection tools in Photoshop. The Marquee, Lasso and Wand are your selection tools.

it's important to note that BLACK on the mask BLOCKS out the image.

WHITE on the mask REVEALS the image.

What's inside the little dotted lines (called marching ants) is being selected.

Holding shift while using a selection tool (Marquee, Lasso, Wand/Quick Selection) adds to the selection.

Holding alt while using a selection tool removes parts from the seleciton.

This lets you fine tune your selection, even selecting multiple parts.

As you can see, once I've clicked the mask, all the elements I selected get "cut out."

Using the paintbrush, I painted a white heart, revealing the image. This is called non destructive editing. I can always "go back" to my old image. By painting black

over my heart.

*Remember to select your mask layer before painting white/black

With a combination of all these tools, you can do things like, cut out Yoda.

Combined with a layer Mask one you virtually "cut out" segments of an image.

And put him somewhere he doesn't belong.

Another cool thing you can do with the selection too is Content Aware Fill.  With the people still selected, Edit -> Content Aware Fill (Shift+F5) Photoshop can remove elements from the picture. Like all the people from this park.  Usually you use this with unwanted signs and trees and bushes and things, but it can work with almost anything.
